Jim Nantz forgot about Mike Ditka during the Super Bowl

During and immediately following Denver’s Super Bowl 50 win over the Panthers Sunday, CBS broadcaster Jim Nantz declared that Broncos coach Gary Kubiak was the first coach to win a Super Bowl with a team he played for.

But Kubiak isn’t the first, or even the second coach to accomplish the feat.

As many Twitter users quickly pointed out, Nantz forgot about Mike Ditka, who led the ’85 Bears to the franchise’s only Super Bowl win following a six-year playing career in Chicago.

But Ditka wasn’t the first, either.

Tom Flores won a pair of Super Bowls with the Los Angeles Raiders in 1981 and 1984 following a six-year stint as the team’s quarterback in the 1960s.

Perhaps what Nantz meant to say, as Deadspin correctly points out, is that Kubiak became the first coach to win a Super Bowl with a team he also played for in the Super Bowl.

Kubiak backed up John Elway in three Super Bowl losses in 1986, 1987 and 1989.
