It is tough to overstate just how impressive the Broncos defensive performance was Sunday in the Super Bowl against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. But one Broncos player thinks they compare favorably to a defensive unit considered the best in NFL history.

After the Super Bowl win, Broncos linebacker Danny Trevathan was asked where he thought his defense ranked in history. With respect to the 1985 Bears, Trevathan thinks the Broncos were the best ever.

From NFL.com:

“You’re going to ask me? No. 1. No. 1 in my opinion, over ’85 Bears,” he said. “If not No. 1, No. 2. I feel like we did a good job playing our games. It wasn’t ever pretty, but when you put it in our defense’s hand we always come up with that win.”

The Broncos aren’t the first team to be compared to the ’85 Bears after winning a Super Bowl in dominant fashion. Both the 2014 Seahawks and the 2000 Ravens have been put in that same conversation.

After the game, the Broncos defense received another honor. Star linebacker Von Miller was named the Super Bowl MVP. He became only the 10th defensive player ever to win the award, joining Malcolm Smith from the 2014 Seahawks, Ray Lewis from the 2000 Ravens and Richard Dent from the 1985 Bears.

Trevathan and the defense almost completely bottled up Newton and the high-flying Panthers offense. The Broncos only allowed 10 points, forcing four turnovers including two fumbles recovered by Trevathan.

Interestingly, Trevathan may become much more intimate with the Bears in the near future. The linebacker is hitting free agency and already expects to talk with his former coach, John Fox.
